In a seminar in university, we had the task of redesigning an already existing book. I took on the work “Word and Confession” by and about Pablo Picasso. The book contains confessions about art by the artist himself, as well as poems, a hilarious drama and texts by friends and acquaintances about Picasso. The subject of art and the artist and the different types of texts gave me a lot of room to experiment with layout and typography. Furthermore, Picasso being famous for his prints and paintings, I could implement the quality of handcraft into the design. The red colour and the rough brush texture on the cover underline his loud and extravagant personality In addition to creating the visual itself I bound the books myself.

To do justice to Picasso’s wayward streak, I have highlighted the words “Picasso” or “I” (ich) at the beginning of each chapter, slanted the introductory texts and have collapsed the page numbers and column titles. I have used French inverted commas throughout the book for a fluent reading experience and because France was an important country for Picasso.

The many cuts of the typeface Thesis are perfect for creating a unified text hierarchy and the font looks modern and calm, but also individual.

This tone of red reflects Picasso’s energetic, passionate personality. But the combination of red, white and black and the book cover also evoke the quality of handmade and classic typography. He knew the rules he was breaking.
